How to put a QR code menu on your food truck

Updated October 2026 ยท 5 minute read

A QR menu lets customers read your menu on their phone while they wait in line, so the window moves faster and you stop reprinting boards every time a price changes. Here is how to set one up properly.

1. Point the QR code at a page you can edit

The most common mistake is printing a QR code that links straight to a PDF or a photo of the menu. When a price changes, the code is wrong and you reprint. Link the code to a web page (your own site, a free menu page, or a page on your ordering platform) and edit the page instead. The printed code never has to change.

2. Pick the right size for the distance

A simple rule: the code should be about one tenth of the scanning distance. Customers usually scan from 3 to 6 feet away at a truck window, so the main window code should be at least 4 to 6 inches across. Small counter or table codes, scanned from about a foot away, can be 1.5 to 2 inches.

3. Place it where people already look

Put the big code at eye height next to the order window, not on the side of the truck where people walk past. Add a second, smaller code at the pickup counter for repeat orders, and one near the queue start so people browse before they reach the window.

4. Contrast and finish matter outside

Dark code on a light background scans best; inverted (white on dark) codes fail on some phones. Glossy finishes reflect sun and headlights, so a matte or satin outdoor vinyl scans more reliably. Avoid putting the code behind tinted glass if you can.

5. Tell people what it does

A bare QR code gets ignored. Add a short line like "Scan for menu and prices" right next to it, plus your logo so it looks like yours and not a random sticker.

6. Make the menu page phone-first

7. Test before service

Scan every code with at least one iPhone and one Android phone, from the real distance, in daylight and after dark. Check the link opens the right page and that nothing asks the customer to install an app.
